A man was pushed to the floor during a struggle when he confronted two intruders in his home in Bishop's Stortford.
The burglary happened in Elm Road, which links Barrells Down Road with Cricketfield Lane, on Monday afternoon (June 5) at around 4.15pm.
The resident was in his garden when he noticed two men indoors.
A Hertfordshire police spokeswoman said: "The occupant confronted the men, who then fled, pushing the occupant to the floor as they did so. A mirror was smashed during the struggle.
"Nothing is believed to have been taken at this time."
It is believed the men got into the property by the garage at the rear.
